Green infrastructure planned to treat runoff at the Waquoit Bay public boat ramp

The Association to Preserve Cape Cod is leading design of a stormwater retrofit at the public boat ramp on Waquoit Bay, one of about a dozen ramp projects it is pursuing around the Cape. Ramps like this one often send rain runoff from pavement directly into the water with almost no treatment, carrying nutrients and bacteria that feed algae blooms, deplete oxygen and close beaches and shellfish beds. Horsley Witten Group is producing a design that splits the drainage area into smaller pieces and uses tree trenches, underground infiltration chambers, catch basins and planted bioretention areas, taking advantage of the Cape’s sandy soils.

At the time of a March public meeting the design was about 25 percent complete. Federal, state and private money is paying for design, but APCC still needs funding for permitting and construction, which would begin no earlier than 2027.
